How much does a replacement car key cost?

The cost of car keys vary from around £45 – £300 depending on the make and model of your car. If you are looking to get a spare cut from an original it will be much cheaper than if you have lost all the keys to your car and you need one made from scratch. The price also varies depending on if you want a remote locking key or a standard manual key that you have to insert into the drivers door lock to open it.

Main dealers are very expensive! – Always contact your local locksmiths first to get a price before going straight to the dealer. It’s worth shopping around to see who offers the best price.

Most auto locksmiths are able to come out and cut a key on the roadside using specialist equipment. You could also go into your local locksmiths shop and ask for a second copy to be made, however, most places like Timpsons will not be able to cut you a key as they do not use diagnostic equipment that needs to be plugged into your car. This is to program the transponder chip that talks to the immobiliser in your car.

All vehicles after 1995 are fitted with transponder keys, some can be copied without needing access to your car, however most nowadays require access to the OBD port in the car to communicate with the security features and ECU which is basically your cars brain.
